Marialuisa Bafunno graduated in Scenography at NABA, New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, city where she currently lives and works. He worked, alongside the Academy, as an assistant director at Teatro alla Scala, first as a intern and later as a worker. She had the opportunity to work with directors among wich Mario Martone, Grisha Asagaroff, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Kasper Holten, Jürgen Flimm and follow productions as Turandot, Cavalleria / Pagliacci, Il barbiere di Siviglia, L'elisir d'amore, The turn of the screw and Ti vedo, ti sento, mi perdo. In 2017 she worked as director assistant for Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Coccia di Novara. In 2018 she was stage director during the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo for several productions including Enrico di Borgogna and Donizetti Tudor and several concerts including the concert with Mariella Devia.
In addition to the opera work, she’s been collaborating with Gioele Dix, assisting his show and helping him to write books. She has collaborations as set designer and performer, mainly in the theater, including the company LIS LAB Performing Arts, that conducts a human and site-specific research creating experiences for the audience. The most important shows are Il Maggiore to inaugurate the new theater in Verbania and the site-specific performances Abitare Noepoli and Soup. Since 2014 she’s been working with the multidisciplinary artistic collective Kokoschka Revival as set designer for Trilogia del Tringolo and Lars. In 2016 she founded the theatre company Pleiadi Art Productions with wich she created the performance Frida, during the Frida Kahlo’s exhibition at Mudec in Milan. She collaborates with the Danish company Carte Blanche with whom she practices a theatrical research where the spectator is the protagonist. Among the most important collaborations there are the site-specific journey Skyggen af ​​tid (The shadow of time) and The Byens Gamle Hjerte (The Heart of the City) in collaboration with some exponents of the Teatro de los Sentidos. Parallel to the main activity of director and set designer, she organizes training courses for secondary schools and high school.
